Green Tea

Whether green, white or black, all these are derived from the Camillia sinensis species. The color has to do with the degree of processing and fermentation. Of the catechin compounds found in green tea, the one identified as EGCG is believed to produce the highest level of beneficial activity in the body. Green tea has been found to promote cell death in damaged cells and arrest cell growth. It possesses anti-oxidant, anti-angiogenic, and anti-inflammatory activity. EGCG stimulates genes that direct cancer cells to normalize, while inhibiting genes that instruct uncontrolled cell proliferation. The greatest benefits have been found in populations who drink three or more cups of green tea daily. Quality is key. The best green tea is made from freshly steeped leaves. Many teas on the market have little active green tea compounds in them.
